Description

Ashwagandha (withania somnifera, Indian ginseng, poison gooseberry, winter cherry)

The name from Latin 'withania' means sleep-inducing. Ashwagandha is used as a supplemental herb, it has been used for over 3000 years to battle stress, increase energy levels and improve concentration.

There is a lesser amount of study on the effects, but holistic medicine claims it helps reduce blood sugar levels, reduces cortisol the stress hormone, can boost testosterone and reduce inflammation. These effects improve the overall mood and health of a person.

Cautions

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid it, ashwagandha is considered to make the body warm and this may not be good for a foetus or child. If a person has an autoimmune disease they should also avoid unless recommended by a doctor. This includes issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and type 1 diabetes. Those taking medicine for thyroid disease should be careful as it can increase the thyroid hormone levels in some people.

The fact that ashwagandha reduces blood sugar and blood pressure levels, other medication doses may need to be adjusted if you are taking any. This should be discussed with a doctor.

Ashwagandha should not be taking for 2 weeks before surgery as it can have complications in regard to anaesthesia. People who have ulcers should also avoid it as it can aggravate them. Taking any kind of sedative medicines will increase the effects as ashwagandha also makes one a bit sleepy. This herb seems to increase the immune system so if one is taking imuno-depressants this may mess with their work somewhat.

Allergic reactions are rare, but in case one has swelling of the face or mouth, dizziness, itching or trouble breathing, they should get in touch with a doctor.
