Carrera the brand

Carrera was started in 1956 by Wilhelm Anger, in Austria. The brand was originally called Wilhelm Anger Werker and made sports eyewear. The name Carrera was adopted in 1974, inspired by the famous Carrera Panamericana car race. The name is also closely tied to the car brand Porche; Carrera was the brand that Porche released their eyewear line in collaboration with known as Carrera Porsche Design.

One of the internal developments related to material is what gave Carrera an edge for the time. 'Optyl' a heat-hardened plastic that weighed 20% less than acetate and had improved fit due to a memory effect that provided dimensional stability and permanent elasticity is what boosted the brand's product quality.

Many celebrities wear Carrera sunglasses, in movies and everyday life too. Al Pacino wore them in Scarface, Sylvester Stallone wore them in Cobra. Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl both wore them in the F1 inspired movie Rush. Other names include Brad Pitt, Gwen Stefani and Britney Spears.

Today Carrera is owned by the Safilo group that also owns other brands such as Blenders Eyewear, Smith Optics, Polaroid Eyewear and Prive Revaux.

For the most part, Carrera has retained the original sporty feel from the Wilhelm Anger Werker days. Most models today have something or the other that adds the sports touch to them. This may be something that certain people do not like, but it is something that many do like.

The variety has many options that one can choose from. The shapes vary from circular all the way to rectangular and further to wrap-around ski-goggle-like sunglasses. The materials include metals and plastics, some models fuse both to create an even more interesting look. As for frame colour and lens tints, again there is much diversity.
