This 14-inch inch laptop is a bit thicker and larger than you'd think but does have great battery life. It has the look of a business laptop with an elegant design. The double tone magnesium has a soft finish. From the well-set screen to the sharp black keyboard with its LED-lit buttons, it all feels just on the right side of being boxy. Constructed to be a sturdy workhorse in regular use for the office at 3.6 pounds it doesn't weigh much but a little more than laptops in this size range.

Powered by an Intel Core i5 3rd Gen clocking 1.8 GHz along with 4GB of DDR3 RAM and Intel HD Graphics. The graphics card isn't much in comparison to a dedicated card but is enough to manage some games and the general viewing of movies. The hard drive space is 350GB, depending on what kind of work one does it could be a decent amount of space. The 14-inch touch-free screen is a 1,366x768 pixel display which is antiglare, a useful addition to a work laptop as one ends up looking at the screen for extended periods and can build up eye fatigue. A rubberized concave pointer has been added between the G, H, and B keys, with additional buttons above the extra-large multitouch glass touchpad. Additional bells and whistles include a fingerprint reader (on the right palm rest), a 720p Webcam, and a side docking port. HP also offers a suite of software security features, and the Intel platform includes vPro for enterprise and business use. Tiny dedicated top buttons turn Airplane Mode on and off and toggle mute.

Ports & battery

The HP EliteBook Folio 9470m has plenty of connections including dedicated Ethernet, an SD card slot, three USB 3.0 ports, and both VGA and DisplayPort. There's no HDMI since this is a "business" laptop but HDMI is so universal at this point that the omission is a bit odd. Bluetooth is included and optional 4G broadband connectivity. This laptop shines when it comes to battery life: at 7 hours and 3 minutes using a video-playback test, it's well above the rest of the pack. Web surfing or extended video streaming would lower that number.

The HP EliteBook Folio 9470m is a light, full-featured variation on the business ultrabook, with all the security extras, ports, and solid construction you'd want and a killer battery life.
