Starting as a communications network hardware producer Huawei moved into the phone market, it is one of the top 3 producers of smartphones in the world. In the communications network sector as well Huawei is one of the main players, currently working with 45 of the 50 top telcos. The brand is not just imitating others, they have an R&D department that employes nearly half their total workforce, a staggering 76,000 employees. Huawei has 21 R&D institutes around the world. For the smartphone market, they have been producing quality phones at a low cost, beating a lot of other brands at it too. Their flagship phones are at par with the best phones in the world.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro

The flagship phone was released in 2017. Coming with a sharp OLED display that really made the phone pop; a screen size of 6-inches. The resolution is at a crisp 1080x2160 pixels, bringing the pixel density to 402ppi. The back is made from Corning Gorilla Glass just as the front screen, fused with a metal casing giving it the high end feel expected at this price range.

OS and internal components

It came out of the box with Android 8 Oreo and an extra layer of Huawei's own EMUI 8 user interface. The EMUI skin also enhances the smartphones PC experience when hooked up to a monitor via an HDMI. Powered by a 1.8GHz Octa-Core processor, the HiSilicon Kirin 970 which is a high-performance chipset created by Huawei. Graphics are powered by the Mali-G72 MP12; keeping the visuals running smooth and good enough to be used for games. The storage and RAM both have two options, either 64Gb or 128GB for storage and RAM options of 4GB or 6GB.

Cameras on the Mate 10 Pro

Offering a dual-lens setup for the main camera, with an RGB and a monochrome sensor. One lens is a 20MP while the secondary is a 12MP, both with an aperture of f/1.6. The autofocus is laser aided so it is more exacting and faster than regular autofocus. The selfie camera set up has an 8MP lens with an aperture of f/2.0. This camera system is a partnership with Leica, a top-end lens maker from Germany which gives their camera the much-needed edge.

Sensors, connectivity and battery

As for sensors, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro comes fully stocked including an Accelerometer, a Barometer, a Compass, a Fingerprint reader, Gyro and a Proximity sensor. For connectivity, the phone has WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, Radio, USB-C, Micro-USB, Infrared and Hybrid Dual SIM. The battery is one of the winning points; the 4000mAh capacity battery is larger and ahead of all the phones in its class. Based on the Li-Polymer cells that are more efficient and can also be made into a slimmer form factor. Also incorporated is Huawei's proprietary Super Charge technology which can take the battery up to 50% in half an hour.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is a high-end phone with a price point to match, also built with an Artificial Intelligence Chip to optimise all runnings. It is IP67 certified making it dust and water-resistant, up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. All in all a great phone for its category and range.
