The DJI Mavic 2 Zoom

The Mavic line from DJI has been a great success in the drone market. DJI is a leader of the commercial drone market based on their previous drones. With the Mavic 2 Zoom, the brand has once again produced something worthy. Released alongside the Mavic 2 Pro, there is a fundamental difference between the two. The Mavic 2 Zoom has a smaller sensor but has a 2x optical zoom lens.

Video and photo specs

The overall image and video quality are impressive given the sensor is generally smaller. The 12MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor is kind of what you get in a smartphone, but the visual quality is a lot better due to the lens used in this drone. The lens provides a full-frame equivalent focal range of 24-48mm. This kind of range is useful to get closer shots of people while shooting, something that might be a deciding factor for some users.

The zoom is good quality, with little distortion in the images. Due to the smaller camera, sensor and lens, the Mavic 2 Zoom has a fixed aperture of f/2.8. The ISO is not too smooth with noise, even at ISO 100 settings. The noise can be sorted in RAW processing and isn't too much of an issue with video.

The video formats are varied so one can choose based on what their requirement is. Video can be shot in 4K at up to 30p or 24p versus 25p options, 2.7K at up to 60p, and Full HD at a maximum of 120p. Video can be captured in MP4 or MOV (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265) formats, so it's identical to the Mavic 2 Pro in this area. The difference being it uses D-Cinelike instead of D-Log M and lacks 10-bit HDR.

Flight and other features

Flying this drone has been made easy with all the tech that DJI has developed over the years. The best of this is collision avoidance, the Mavic 2 Zoom has omnidirectional obstacle sensing so it can keep itself and your investment safe. The controller will give you warnings when the drone senses things are too close so you can also pay attention to your manoeuvring. In the Sports Mode these sensors are deactivated so you will have to manage the drone yourself and that too at a higher speed.

The max speed can be up to 72kph so it is really something one needs to learn before unleashing the sports mode. The flight time is slated at 31 minutes but this does depend on conditions and usually, you will only get about 25 minutes.

There is a setting that will call the drone back when the battery is low, you can set it at 25% or 15% based on what kind of distance you are trying to cover. Inside there is 8GB of space which could have been a bit more but you can add in a microSD card for more space.

Shooting modes

The intelligent video modes include Hyperlapse, Quickshot, Active Track, Point of Interest, Waypoints, TapFly and Cinematic Mode. In video, the flying is also handled by the drone more than the user. For photos that is a bit different, it is more about what is happening inside the camera aside from Pano in which the flying is also taken care of. Shooting modes for photos include Single Shot, Burst Mode, HDR, AEB, HyperLight (night mode), Interval and Pano, which offers a number of different panoramic shooting options including one that is only available in the Mavic 2 Zoom for now – the Super Res.

Super Res mode takes 9 shots that are stitched together to create a high-resolution 48MP JPEG. If one wants this in RAW they have to do it manually in Photoshop or Lightroom. There is also Tripod Mode that slows the drone, also making it less responsive so the shooting is smoother.

Intelligent flight modes help as it would be hard for a newer user to learn the complex moves and shoot well too. The teams at DJI are acutely aware of how hard it used to be to fly drones and have made technological compensations to make this process as easy as possible.

As far as drones go this is a well made and efficient option for your needs. Easy to operate with many different modes and high-quality results being put out. The Mavic 2 Zoom is an expensive high-end device to purchase.
