What is a mirrorless camera

Unlike a DSLR in a mirrorless camera, the light travels from the lens and straight onto the sensor. Mirrorless cameras have an Electronic View Finder versus the Optical View Finder that was common in older cameras.

Advantages of a mirrorless camera

There is the added benefit of being a lot more compact as the mirror takes up quite a bit of space in DSLRs. Mirrorless cameras reduce the shake caused by the mirror flipping when you click after framing a shot. These are also better for video and overall perform faster as there isn't a moving part inside, meaning they can shoot a lot more images in succession. Perhaps for video though the mirrorless cameras work better as the DSLRs can’t use phase detection with the mirror up while recording video so they have to use the slower, less accurate, contrast-detection focus method. This can lead to the familiar blurry look in the middle of a video when the camera starts hunting for the right focus. Most mirrorless cameras are also able to shoot in 4K or UHD.

Other considerations

Given the mirrorless cameras have a large previewing screen, their battery time is less than DSLRs. Also as it is a relatively newer technology there aren't as many accessories and lenses in the market yet.

Mirrorless cameras are currently very expensive, sitting right at the top of the price spectrum. Although expensive, a mirrorless camera could be very useful for anyone who needs a pro-level camera without the bulk.
