Mortein was founded in the 1870s by a German man living in Australis by the name of J. Hagemann. Faced with insect infestation he created a repellent mixture using chrysanthemum flowers. The pyrethrum extract he was left with after processing the ingredients created a strong insecticidal powder. By 1928, he has created a liquid version that used kerosene as a base ingredient. The iconic hand pump system to kill bugs comes from this design now called a flit gun. The company was carried forwards by major industries and was acquired by a British industrialist that made into an international brand. The animated mascot for Mortein called Louie the Fly first appeared on television in 1957.
