What does a multimeter do & types

A multimeter is an electronic measuring device used to calculate multiple measurement functions in one unit. A typical multimeter can measure voltage, current, and resistance. Analog multimeter's show the information by way of a 'microammeter' which has a display needle that bounces up and down as it moves along a value scale. More common today are digital multimeters with a numeric representation of the values it is reading and some also have a graph like display of the read values. Digital multimeters are also more common because of their lower cost and greater precision, but analog multimeters are still preferable in some cases for example when monitoring a rapidly varying value. Some are cheap and others that have calibration certified by relevant bodies can cost a lot more.

A handy device to check voltages in the field when undertaking electrical work. Keep the multimeters battery in check or maybe keep a spare pair with you just in case.
