Description

The 50mm focal length has the same field of view as the human eye, that's the reason it delivers the most natural and distortion-free results. When paired with a fast 1.8 large aperture, the 50mm focal length lets you take astounding photos with a shallow depth-of-field, making subjects stand out by applying a beautiful blur to the backdrop.

What's New

The Nikon 50mm 1.8G lens received a few important upgrades over its predecessors. It comes with a modified optical design that consists of 7 optical elements in 6 groups. Out of the 7, one is an aspherical element that helps reduce chromatic aberrations and coma, making the Nikon 50mm 1.8G the first Nikon 50mm lens to exhibit an aspherical element. This feature is lacking in even the more expensive and higher-end Nikon 50mm 1.4G lens.

Design

Clad in plastic the lens features a metal mount and a solid build, however, it comes with an increased size due to the changes made in optical and barrel designs. Despite being big in size, the It weighs only 30 grams heavier than the previous iterations and 95 grams lighter than the Nikon 1.4G.

Low-Light Photography

Nikon 50mm 1.8G Lens is the best option for low-light photography, isolating subjects from the background and rendering beautiful background highlights commonly known as the bokeh effect to give an incredible quality to your pictures. Whenever a flash is not required you can use this lens for shooting great low-light indoor photos for bright and sharp results.

Portraiture

The lens on DX sensors becomes equivalent to a 75mm lens, which is great for portraiture, but not the best option for other types of photography. When shooting portraits, the lens is able to capture minute details as it features the Super Integrated Coating that enhances colour consistency and light transmission while reducing flare.

Optical Improvements

With an improved optical design, the Nikon 50 mm 1.8G comes with a larger lens barrel and a static front lens element that does not rotate or extend through autofocus operations. This aspect renders more durability to the lens as well as making the use of filter holders and circular filters quite easy.

Silent Wave Motor

Apart from the optical improvements, the lens is integrated with a silent wave motor called the AF-S, that aside from delivering fast, accurate and near-silent focus operation, allows the full use of the lens even on entry-level DSLRs. The earlier iterations required a focus motor for the same purpose. With the AF-S motor, you can use autofocus with a manual focus override, a feat not possible with any of the AF-D prime lenses. The lens comes with a Super Integrated Coating, ensuring superior colour consistency, decreased ghosting and lens flare as well as improved light transmission efficiency.

Compatibility

Though the Nikon 50 mm 1.8G is compatible with both Nikon FX and DX sensors, experts believe it to be more suitable to FX sensors for everyday photography.

Weather-Sealing

Nikon 50mm 1.8G lens is not weather- sealed. However, it features a rubber gasket on the lens mount that prevents dust or particles from making their way into the camera, providing a good sealing against moisture and dust. To further reduce chances of dust or moisture infiltration, remember to get a high-quality 58mm clear/protective filter and keep it on the lens at all times. Aside from protecting the front element, this protective filter makes it super easy and convenient to clean the lens whenever the need be.
