Description
Target Market
Nikon marketed its D3400 as an entry-level DSLR for beginners and experienced DSLR enthusiasts. Nikon introduced its D3400 with SnapBridge in August 2016. It is one of the best entry-level cameras that is incredibly easy to use even for a first-timer and small enough to be taken just anywhere. Though it cant be compared to Nikon's mid-level or above cameras, it does what it says and delivers great results.
Design & Display
Featuring a delightfully compact monocoque structure, it has a screen size of 3.0-inch and a respectable resolution of 921,000 dots. There is no articulating or touchscreen in Nikon D3400 and neither an automatic sensor cleaning. The camera comes with great battery life, good image quality and a solid autofocus system, With an ISO of 100-25600, it is a 24.2-megapixel DX-format F-mount DSLR camera, fully capable of shooting Full HD 1080/60p videos.
Viewfinder
Both the viewfinder and LCD are quite satisfactory at this level. The viewfinder displays approximately 95% of the scene and is based on a pentamirror construction. However, a 100% coverage would have been more satisfying.
Performance
it is paired with Nikon's EXPEED 4 processing engine, that allows 5fps burst shooting and Full HD video recording up to a splendid 60p. Though you cant shoot videos in 4K with the Nikon D3400 but then not many entry-level DSLRs have this feature anyway. Nikon got rid of the Optical Low-Pass Filter and thankfully you can now capture more detail and crisper images with this camera. It also offers Effects mode with different options like Toy Camera, Night Vision, Miniature Effect, Illustration, and Super Vivid, perfect for those who like to customise and tailor their photos/videos into more distinct styles.
AutoFocus
With its 11-point AF system and 3D tracking technology, you can set the camera to continuously focus on a subject. The camera can also continue to autofocus while recording videos and in live view. You can also focus manually by selecting manual focus option through the menu. D3400 quickly acquires your subject and yields focus precision, even in low light situations and high-speed shootings. Immortalize your precious moments through the quiet and high-speed AF operation with comfortable and easy movie recording.
Battery
Nikon D3400 is a bit lighter than the earlier D3300 and also has longer battery life. The battery offers 1200 frames per charge, which is way better than its predecessor D3300, that stood at a mere 700 frames per charge. It is also much more than what the average mirrorless cameras are offering.
Connectivity
Nikon hasn't included Wi-Fi in this model but it allows wireless image transmission through the SnapBridge feature that keeps the camera always connected to Bluetooth via a constant Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection. The constant but minimal energy use, allows you to carry on clicking and sharing without excessive battery consumption on neither the camera nor the connected devices.
Data Transfer
Collaborating with the SnapBridge app, the D3400 automatically transfers the pictures to your smart devices, so you can share them online in a heartbeat! SnapBridge can also automatically upload your pictures to Nikon Image Space, that is Nikon's very own photo-sharing service. However, you cannot transfer videos from this camera.
Remote Shooting
Though the DSLR doesn't allow remote access or control of the camera's shooting settings in any way, optional ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control is available for remote shooting. With SnapBridge you can also access your camera via your smart device even when the camera is switched off.
Guide Mode
For a better understanding of the camera and to help first-timers know the nitty-gritty of their prized possession, Nikon D3400 comes with a Guide mode feature. It teaches users the basics of operating the camera and assists them in taking great shots in a variety of situations.
