Description
Nikon was an optical lens maker
A giant in the camera industry Nikon is probably one of the top two producers. Having been in the camera business for decades with their first camera being released in 1948; the brand was producing optical lenses before that even. With that much experience, they have honed their craft and produced precise cutting edge lenses for multiple purposes including riflescopes, ophthalmic lenses and binoculars. With the basic technology being related to high-quality lenses and then branching into other fields that required lenses to function.
How Nikon lenses became famous
Nikon lenses became more well known when David Douglas Duncan, a famous photojournalist who covered multiple wars, started using them during the Korean War from July 1950 to January 1951. The results were very sharp high-contrast images, which were in part attributed to the lenses he was employing from Nikon.
Nikkor is also Nikon
Nikon also used the name Nikkor for lenses produced by the same company. The range varies just as much as the price with some that are a few hundred dollars to lenses that are over a hundred thousand dollars! With the new market around DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras, their lenses are built with the AutoFocus ability and image stabilization so if you are zooming into something there is less blur in the image.
A wide range
Starting at a 6mm f/2.8 Fish Eye lens that looks like a big flat bubble and can nearly see behind itself and ending up at a Nikkor 1200-1700mm f/5.6-8.0 Lens. With lenses for sports photography from a great distance, lenses for low light, macro lenses for taking pictures of tiny bugs, wide-angle lenses to capture as much as possible in small spaces, lenses that are good for covering events to prime lenses used in portrait photography and more. The range is about as diverse as are the subjects to be photographed. The professional level lenses, of course, have better build as far as lens quality goes and are more weather resistant, but also cost a substantial amount more.
If the lens' title has “EF” (no S) in it, then you can use that lens on either full-frame or crop frame sensor cameras. If you see “DX” in the title the lens is for crop-frame DSLRs only. “FX” in the title, means the lens was designed for full-frame (but can also be used on crop frames). "CX" lenses, also known as 1 Nikkor lenses were introduced in 2011 and are specifically designed to be used with the Nikon 1 mirrorless digital camera system. Nikon’s PC or ‘Perspective Control’ are manual focus lenses that allow the shooters to alter the angle between the focal plane and the camera sensor, this adjustment allows compensation for the Keystone effect which causes parallel lines in an image to converge if the camera is not perfectly level. PC lenses can also be used to increase the depth of field at wide apertures, and are extremely popular with landscape and architectural photographers.
DC or ‘Defocus Control’ lenses are designed for portrait photography and allow subtle alteration of out of focus elements or bokeh. Not to be confused with soft-focus lenses, DC lenses are in fact extremely sharp at in-focus areas. Bokeh is adjusted by controlling the amount of spherical aberration in specific areas of an image, allowing the shooter to make subtle background adjustments that can dramatically alter the impact of an image.
The gold ring
A gold ring mounted around the end of a Nikon F-Mount lens indicates that the lens is of professional quality. Gold Ring lenses feature an enticing mix of fast, constant apertures and complex high fidelity optical formulas using aspherical elements along with special low dispersion glass. Housed in robust metal and lightweight composite bodies, utilizing exotic lens coatings. Gold ring lenses represent the pinnacle of Nikon lens technology. Gold rings can be found on lenses ranging in focal length from 10mm to 800mm.
Comments
Nikon lenses are continually updated with the latest tech available, in fact, they are one of the creators of new innovations in the lens market. Surprisingly Nikon's least expensive lens is it's most sharp, with least distortion and one of the quickest autofocus timings! The 50mm f/1.8 D. The prices vary from the lower end all the way to the top, depending on the lens.
