Description

OnePlus makes powerful smartphones that have high-end specs and are slick with their performance. The brand's ideology is built around minimalism and functionality. This makes their devices easy to use as they are simple. OnePlus is owned by the BKK Electronics Corporation which is one of the biggest producers of smartphones by way of owning Oppo, Vivo and Realme as well.

There are a lot of options and among them, one can find the OnePlus 8 Pro.

The Oneplus 8 Pro internal specs and OS

This is a high-end model that has powerful components, making it a quick smartphone. The octa-core Qualcomm SM8250 Snapdragon 865 powers the heart. A chipset made using the 7nm+ method. It also features Qualcomm's X55 5G modem, which enables super-fast internet wherever 5G is available. For graphics this smartphone makes use of the Adreno 650.

To power the tasking one has the option for 8GB or 12GB of RAM. The storage also has two variants with these choices, the 8GB RAM variant comes with 128GB storage and the 12GB one has 256GB. The storage is UFS 3.0, making for a faster system. The Oneplus 8 Pro does not have space for an SD card though, but with the large built-in storage, one may not need it.

As with all Oneplus smartphones, the OS is based on the Android platform. Making use of Android 10, a software that is machine learning able. This allows it to learn the user's patterns and prime the phone in reflection, making the overall performance faster with time. Layered onto this is the brands own user interface, OxygenOS 10.

OxygenOS 10 allows for more customisation in comparison to the bare Android base. This includes options for quick gestures, which can let you launch the camera, toggle the flashlight or open an app of your choice. Also letting you play with the system's colours, icons and more. There is even a full dark mode under 'Tone' in settings. It applies to all of Oneplus' pre-installed apps.

Display

In its class and for the time this smartphone has one of the best displays around. It is a large 6.78 inches, based on the Fluid AMOLED technology. The resolution is 1440 x 3168p, which brings the pixels per inch to 513 and is HDR10+. This device has a high 120Hz refresh rate. This last feature along with the resolution and Fluid AMOLED technology makes it ideal for gaming as well. This will make the gaming experience very smooth.

The brightness level is among the highest ever at 1300 nits. Oneplus is not yet done with the display related upgrades. It has also added in 'vibrant colour effect pro' (VCEP) and 'motion graphics smoothing' (MGS) settings. The VCEP improves colour and contrast, making one's videos pop a bit extra. With the MGS setting the Oneplus 8 Pro increases the framerate of videos one is watching, although this works for select apps such as Gallery, YouTube, Netflix and a few others.

This latter function is a matter of personal preference as well, not everyone will enjoy it as it can make things unnaturally smooth sometimes. Also, sometimes the palm touch rejection system on the display lacks a bit which can be annoying.

All this is protected by Gorilla Glass 6 and the back of the smartphone has Gorilla Glass 5.

Cameras

Till this point, it has been rare for a smartphone to have two powerful sensors in one camera module. The Oneplus 8 Pro has two 48MP sensors, one above the other. One is the main sensor with an aperture of f/1.78, optical image stabilization, along with electronic image stabilization and 4K video abilities. The second 48MP sensor is used for the ultrawide shots and is the Sony IMX586, with an aperture of f/2.2 and a 119.7-degree field of view.

Next, the Oneplus 8 Pro has a 5MP colour filter lens, this is designed to bring the Instagram filter feels directly to the camera app. The last sensor is an 8MP telephoto one, it has 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom.

The default shooting mode uses the 48MP sensor but saves files at a 12MP rate. This saves a lot of space and if one wants to shoot at a higher grade there is a toggle switch for quick access to the setting. The 48MP images carry more detail and shoot closer to what real-life colours are like. This means one would need to perhaps edit a bit if they want it to have the social media gloss.

On the front, there is a 16MP sensor which is for selfies. It takes a bit of a wide shot and has an aperture of f/2.5.

The camera app in combination with these sensors makes for a powerful system. There are multiple shooting modes and the night shooting mode is actually faster than quite a few other smartphones currently.

Connectivity, sensors and battery

The connectivity options in this smartphone are complete, with whatever is the latest possible for the time. The WiFi is Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and dual-band. The Bluetooth system is built for A2DP, aptX HD and LE as well. Bluetooth LE is a low energy variant that works for leashing with wearables and uses lesser battery in the process. The Oneplus 8 Pro also includes GPRS, GPS, NFC, Dual-SIM and USB. The USB is a Type-C 1.0 reversible connector and features the USB On-The-Go functionality too. Even retaining the 3.5mm audio jack which has Dirac HD sound optimisation for all systems, making one's audio experience enhanced.

The Oneplus 8 Pro makes use of all the sensors, including a compass, an accelerometer, gyro, proximity and a fingerprint reader that is embedded into the display.

For the battery, Oneplus has opted for a 4510mAh cell. This may seem like a lower spec but combined with the processor's management capabilities it makes for a serious amount of usage given the device's size and power. It lets this smartphone last a day with a lot of usage; including video playback, gaming, calls, video calls, social media and photography.

Fast charging has the smartphone at 50% in a little over 20 minutes.

Comments

The Oneplus 8 Pro has an IP68  certification meaning it is dust and water-resistant. It can be in 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes, so it is safe to say a dunk in water won't have it short out. This is a sturdy device with an aluminium frame.

Smartphone speakers are not much to go by for one's music, still the Oneplu 8 Pro has Dolby Atmos technology to provide a deeper and more rich sound.

This smartphone from Oneplus is a premium offering and is a good choice even it's class. The price is high for this device and it is available in Glacial Green, Ultramarine Blue and Onyx Black colour variants.
