Description

Oppo A12

Part of the same family as Vivo, Realme and OnePlus, Oppo is a budget-friendly smartphone brand. The A12 was released in April 2020 and caters to people looking for an affordable option to purchase, but one that has all the needed functions for them to be able to stay connected to the digital sphere today.

Internals & OS

The Oppo A12 has the Mediatek MT6765 Helio P35 at its centre, an octa-core processor which has four cores at a clock speed of 1.8GHz and another four at 2.35GHz. For graphics, there is the integrated PowerVR GE8320 from Imagination Technologies. A mid-range graphics processor but with ample power to optimise the hardware for affordable gaming.

RAM is at 4GB and the storage is 64GB which can be extended via a dedicated SDcard slot, adding on another 256GB to storage.

This smartphone is based on the Android platform and is making use of Android 9 Pie, a machine learning able system that can learn user patterns to tune the smartphone's performance. Over this Oppo has layered on their UI, ColorOS 6.1; this adds some extra customisation options so users can change up the feel of their device to suit them. This includes Game Space for game performance parameters, dark mode, Hyper Boost and more.

Display and camera

Built with an IPS LCD, the display is at 6.22 inches which is a decent size to enjoy most of your media on. The resolution is 720 by 1520 pixels, bringing it just close to HD. The pixels per inch come to 270, making it a decent experience for the range and class this smartphone belongs to.

For the main camera, Oppo has gone with a dual-sensor setup, the main one is at 13MP with an aperture of f/2.2 and a secondary one for depth is a 2MP sensor. The selfie camera is a 5MP sensor, a relatively low spec if one is really into their selfies. The camera app adds in features such as geo-tagging, face detection, panorama and HDR. Video is shot at 1080p with a frame rate of 30fps; this is for the main camera.

Connectivity, sensors and others

To keep one tethered to all the digital world, Oppo has given this smartphone Dual SIM, Bluetooth, WiFi and FM Radio. There isn't any NFC so contact-based payment systems will not work. For porting there is a microUSB and a 3,5mm audio jack, the latter of which is super useful as a lot of people still have their wired headphones.

Sensors that make usage streamlined include an accelerometer, a compass, a fingerprint reader on the rear and a proximity sensor.

To power all these features there is a 4230mAh battery that is based on the Li-Polymer cell technology, meaning it has a slimmer form factor which keeps the overall size of the smartphone slim as well.

Comments

The overall design of this smartphone is in line with the modern feel and is minimal, with a slight pattern on the rear. The colour options are in black or blue so one can choose the colour they prefer.

This is a good choice for someone looking to purchase something within the lower-midrange price that has all the necessary functionalities.
