An automated device that vacuums your space. A robot vacuum cleaner is often referred to as 'Roomba', this is due to the first successful device which was called Roomba; produced by iRobot. The first robotic vacuum cleaner, however, was produced by Electrolux in 1996 but had too many issues for it to be accepted by the market. 

iRobot's devices are regularly hacked by people to perform other tasks as well. Due to the commonality of this, the brand produced the iRobot Create which allows users to modify it more easily. With ample space for add-ons.

Possible features of robot vacuum cleaners

Today as there are many brands producing these devices the features vary. Possible features can include UV sterilization and HEPA filters. Robot vacuum cleaners are built with anti-drop sensing so they don't roll off the stairs. There are sensors for them to not get entwined with wires too.

Obstacle detection helps them avoid furniture and other items around the space. Some models have mapping abilities so they can store the floor plan and then clean more efficiently. This mapping also lets them mark areas that have been cleaned or not, this helps reduce repetition and make the cleaning more efficient. One can also set virtual no-go lines for certain models.

Robotic vacuum cleaners have various cleaning modes. These can include general cleaning, scheduled cleaning, turbo (extra cleaning), edge cleaning for the skirting, spot or spiral mode for a particular zone and also remote mode that allows users to guide the robot to a particular spot. Another possible feature is the detection of carpet, after which the vacuum's power is turned up so it is more suited to getting dirt out of carpets.

Today a lot of models are able to communicate with one's smartphone and keep you updated aside from letting you control the modes and features.

There are also wet mopping robot vacuum cleaners, which work better for hard surfaces.

Robot vacuum cleaners take up lesser space in comparison to the regular vacuum cleaners, but this means that it does take a lot more time to clean due to its size.

iRobot's Roombas is still the best option. Other known brands include Neato and Phillips. There are even more brands, and sizes vary from brand to brand as do the features. The price of a better robot vacuum cleaner is still high.
