A smartphone that is full of features and upgrades, upgrades that have set it apart in the market and not just ahead of its predecessor. Especially with the 120Hz screen refresh rate. Aside from this, the camera system is also great with its improvements. The Samsung Galaxy S20 is from the top of the price point.

Pros & Cons

  • Amazing display

  • Powerful internals

The Samsung Galaxy S20

From the 2020 flagship line put out by Samsung, the Galaxy S20 is the smaller one out of the three. The other two smartphones launched alongside the Galaxy S20 are the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. In comparison the Galaxy S20 is smaller and is easy to use with one hand, this works well for people who want a flagship model that isn't a massive size. The new range has skipped many numbers, the last one was the S10 range, this is due to the fact that there are many upgrades including being 5G ready (Although Pakistan only has the 4G model available).

Internals and OS

As specs vary from region to region, in Pakistan the Samsung Galaxy S20 comes with their own processor. Known as the Exynos 990, a powerful top tear processor. The Exynos 990 has dedicated AI processing, enabling it to improve on most other functions such as taking pictures. The AI will enhance the images bringing the closer to pro-quality. Also a great processor for gaming and other high-performance tasks. The RAM available is at 8GB with internal storage at 128GB, the system is the UFS 3.0. A faster system that can read and write at the same time, along with better interconnectedness between storage and RAM. The storage can be extended via a card adding up to 1TB more, which is more than ample space. Most people are using laptops with that much or a little less space.

For the OS Samsung has used Android 10, Googles latest current version of their OS. Samsung has overlaid a skin, their OneUI. This allows for greater customisation options in comparison to the base Android 10 system. Samsung allows you to delete most of their versions of apps if you want to stick to the Google versions.

Only 0.1 inch larger than its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S20 has a display of 6.2 inches. The full resolution is a WQHD at 3040 x 1440p. Although, by default, Samsung runs the FullHD 2220 x 1080p which saves battery power and is ample resolution to be crisp and clear. One of the big upgrades on this smartphone is related to the display, it has a refresh rate of 120Hz. This is almost double of any mainstream smartphone before, including the Samsung family. This means that scrolling and animation will be super smooth. Also, a huge advantage for gaming, as the game will be visually superior.

One does have to make a choice between the top refresh rate and WQHD, the phone can't run them simultaneously. Screen sensitivity has gone from 120Hz to 240Hz, a feature average users may not notice as better but serious gamers will appreciate it.

In the spec mentions the camera systems are similar but the up-gradation is internal. The main camera is at 12MP with an aperture of f/1.8, which seems lesser than its predecessor's dual aperture f/1.5 + f/ 2.4. But with the Galaxy S20, Samsung has increased the size of the pixels from 1.4 microns to 1.8 and combined them with a larger sensor. This allows it to capture more detail and more light. The telephoto is a 64MP camera, which is a lot higher than the 12MP from the last model. The pixel size is smaller individually but the higher megapixel count more than compensates. With wider aperture as well at f/2.0, taking in more light. With 3x lossless zoom and 30x digital zoom. The latter also functions pretty clear if needed.

The ultrawide angle shooting is handled by a 12MP camera, which is less than last years 16MP setup. But with larger pixels over a smaller sensor, it shoots better than the previous model. For video, this range of smartphones breaks a barrier by introducing 8K recording. Another great feature is the Super Steady stabilization, which can compensate for about 60 degrees roll. These two features cannot be used together, the Supr Steady only works with the 1080p. Also, it shoots in 4K, giving one access to multiple qualities.

Aside from the regular features of the Samsung camera app, they have also introduced Single Take. A mode that takes shots and videos from the many cameras simultaneously within 10 seconds. The short clips may not be perfect but it saves one the hassle of having to flit between menus. Overall the camera system is top quality, as one would expect from a flagship smartphone.

Other features and comments

Needless to say, the sensors are packed with more than your average phone, including an spO2 reader of oxygen saturation. The fingerprint reader is embedded into the screen. Connectivity also has the complete gamut. Since Samsung owns AKG, the audio has been tuned by them. AKG is one of the leaders of audio tech, which gives the Galaxy S20 an edge. The headphones jack is no more, one needs a connector or headphones that have a USB Type-C jack. This smartphone is also waterproof and dust resistant with a rating of IP68.

The battery is based on Li-Polymer technology. The battery is a 4000mAh capacity battery, which is ready for Fast Charging. The Samsun Galaxy S20 is also Qi ready, meaning it can be charged via a wireless cradle. With the special ability of being able to charge other devices that are Qi ready, meaning it functions as a power bank too.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 is from the top end of the price spectrum, given all the features packed into it and also that it is a flagship smartphone. A great device with a sleek design and robust build. The colours it was released in, include Cloud Blue, Cosmic Grey and Cloud Pink.
