A smart door lock gives users a lot of functions that make access convenient. A smart door lock connects to the WiFi network and can be controlled from your smartphone or tablet. Certain locks also have the ability to work using Bluetooth, adding another layer of convenience.

Many smart door locks also come with a keypad, biometrics and a key slot. This gives them versatility, one can set codes that are time-specific so that code works only at the specified times. The key slot is there in case the power is out and the battery is dead too.

Some of these smart door locks have a mini-USB port so one can power it up using a power bank in case the battery is dead and needs recharging.

Security concerns

Just like all things digital and connected to the WiFi, a smart door lock can be hacked. This would not be an easy task for someone targeting it unless they have a very specific skill set as a hacker who is able to beat serious encryption. In comparison to a lock with just a key, the safety levels are not all that different.

Many brands produce smart door locks today as this is part of the IoT idea of a modern connected world. Google's Nest brand has made one with the famous lock makers Yale. Other top brands are Schlage and Kwikset.

Smart door locks are available for relatively higher prices.
