A loose, long-sleeved, collarless pullover made from soft fabric. The original sweat shirt was created by Benjamin Russell Jr. A football player who was tired of the itchy wool jerseys that would chaff the player while practising. The sweat shirt was his answer, made real by his father; a very comfortable kind of top. This was in 1926, with the brand being established in 1930 and the Russel Athletic brand is still around today.

The original was in cotton so it was also breathable and could be worn in varying weather. Today one can also find sweat shirts made from a fleece based material which is warmer. The cuffs are elastic as is the waist, this helps keep the heat trapped and is meant to induce sweat during a warm-up. The cotton sweat shirt is also good at absorbing sweat. 

The hoodie is a furthering of the sweat shirt, it used the same material and design but added a hood on top.

Men's sweat shirts can be found in any number of colours and have many graphic designs on them as well. Nearly every brand produces its version of a men's sweat shirt today, it is one of the most standard and go-to pieces of garment all over the world. Many sports teams, universities and collegiate teams have their own team colours for representation.

The price of a men's sweat shirt varies a lot as does their quality, a good sweat shirt can last years. Prices range from the affordable to expensive, depending on the brand.
