The original sweat shirt was created by Benjamin Russell Jr. A football player who was tired of the itchy wool jerseys that would chaff the player while practising. The sweat shirt was his answer, made real by his father; a very comfortable kind of top. This was in 1926, with the brand being established in 1930 and the Russel Athletic brand is still around today.

The original was in cotton so it was also breathable and could be worn in varying weather. Today one can also find sweat shirts made from a fleece based material which is warmer. The cuffs are elastic as is the waist, this helps keep the heat trapped and is meant to induce sweat during a warm-up. The cotton sweat shirt is also good at absorbing sweat. 

The hoodie is a furthering of the sweat shirt, it used the same material and design but added a hood on top.
