One of the top pastime activities, video games are a huge hit with many age groups and demographics. Most are not aware of how big video games are when it comes to the entertainment sector; the largest box office opening weekend belongs to a video game, Red Dead Redemption 2 which made $725 million.

Video games can be played on many platforms, this includes desktop PCs, home consoles, handheld consoles, hybrid consoles and smartphones. Home consoles include devices such as the PlayStation and Xbox. Handheld consoles refer to devices like the Nintendo Switch or Nintendo 3DS. The Nintendo Switch is also a hybrid as it can be easily connected to the TV for a larger screen.

There are so many video games one could choose from for each of these individual platforms. With numerous game studios and lots of different genres when it comes to types of games. Racing, shooting, strategy and role-playing games are among the leading genres.

These games are on different kinds of CDs or cartridges, the latter of which are console specific. The CDs require an optical drive which it is inserted into. There are also video games that can be downloaded, this is also the only method that works for smartphones.

Famous video games

There are some franchises that have done well over the years and can be played on multiple platforms, these are titles such as Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, FIFA, Street Fighter, Gran Turismo, Tomb Raider, Mortal Combat, Final Fantasy, Super Mario, Need for Speed, Prince of Persia, Metal Gear Solid and Hitman. These are only a few of the titles known all over the world. One can find games based on stories, movies and comics as well; which means there are games from Marvel and DC as well as Harry Potter, Jumanji, Star Wars and many more known storylines.

Other known titles include Gears of War, Minecraft, Doom, Tom Clancy's, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Halo, The Elder Scrolls, The Witcher, Warcraft, Overwatch, DotA and Far Cry. There are a lot more games that can be added to this list as each year sees many new releases.

As the video games get better with improved graphics and player interactivity, the systems that they can be played on, need to be upgraded as well so they can take on the heavy computation. Due to this, one would need to beef up their PC every few years and with the consoles, new iterations are released every so many years. There is, however, backward compatibility which means older video games can be played on newer systems.

Video games have ratings that pertain to age limits, as some games show violence and gore or contain crude language that may not be suitable for younger people. This rating, to a degree, also refers to the complexity of the puzzles or hardness levels, younger kids may not be able to play such complex games.

Playing video games helps one with problem-solving abilities and hand-eye coordination; depending on the specific games.

The price of video games varies a lot, mostly based on the year of their release as well as what format they are available in. This could range from the lower end to mid-range prices.
