Established in 1970 by Alvin B. Phillips under the name General Digital; the current name was adopted in 1971. Western Digital has worked in multiple technological sectors related to computing, including making chips and computers.

Over time the brand moved into memory products such as hard drives and flash memory. The product range includes various types of hard drives, memory cards and USBs. Western Digital also owns the brands SanDisk and G-Technology. SanDisk is another flash memory wing and G-Technology is a range of high performance external hard drives.
