Larger spaces that have corners and possible chokes in the way they are structured and need WiFi repeaters to get the signal in rooms that are farther from the main WiFi router. A WiFi repeater receives the signal from a router and then amplifies it, broadcasting it further to the devices that need connectivity. Dual-band WiFi repeaters work more efficiently as the single-band uses the same channel to send and receive data packets. The switching between sending and receiving slows it down compared to a dual-band option. In the dual-band WiFi repeater, the sending is done over one channel and receiving over another, thus having a two-way stream which ends up being more efficient.

2 part WiFi repeater

There are also WiFi repeaters that have 2 components. In that case, one part connects to the router using an ethernet cable and the second part is in the location you need WiFi. This creates a bridge between the two components of the WiFi repeater. This type works well for when one needs a high powered signal for gaming or work.

WiFi repeaters lose some of the main WiFi connections speed, this is a given. The amount that is lost depends on the brand and of course the type of WiFi repeater in use. A better brand will have a more powerful processor that can make it perform better thus incurring lesser signal losses.

The price of a WiFi repeater is in the mid-ranges. The known brands that produce them include TP-Link, Linksys, Asus, Netgear and D-Link.
