Overview
Server grade processing power has some requirements that are not met by regular processors, for this specific purpose Intel developed the Xeon line. Based on a similar architecture to its other processors but with differences that allow it to have more parallel tasking power, something that helps with heavy systems. Most of the best supercomputers today employ Xeon processors. A top-level chip that is available at a high price point. The Xeon line was released in 1998.
Description
Intel Xeon
Designed for a market segment that is running more parallel tasks, such as servers or non-consumer workstations. This is also why the core count is more important than the clock-time of the processor being used in such a setup. Xeon processors are based on the same architecture as regular processors but have support for ECC memory, support for a larger amount of RAM, larger cache memory and with support for enterprise-level reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS). RAS features allow a system to continue operating even if portions of it fail. Generally, if a portion fails the whole system crashes, with RAS the failure is in proportion. This is known as graceful degradation.
The Xeon line is also used by some video editors and other users who need more processing power. The higher core count has its advantages for them. There is the disadvantage of Xeon processors not having integrated GPUs, which means a user needs a separate chip for graphics.
Xeon processors are present in 80% of the most powerful supercomputers that are present in the TOP500 list. Intel has continuously upgraded this line of processing chips along with their regular processors. This is a high-performance processing chip that is available at a high-end price point.
