A bit about Xiaomi

Xiaomi is the largest extant smartphone brand in China, all over the world, it is among the top 5 as well. The brand does not only produce smartphones but makes a host of other products. This includes electric scooters, smart TVs and even a DIY robot kit. 

Their Redmi AirDots are wireless earbuds which have also done well in the market due to their quality versus the pricing.

Xiaomi Redmi AirDots

With wireless earbuds being the new norm, almost every brand is producing them. Headphone and smartphone brands, both have been making their iterations. Xiaomi has made their own version and calls them AirDots. These are about a 5th the price of Apple's AirPods as not everyone wants to spend so much on their accessories.

Set inside a small pill-box that is also the charger, they are held in place by small magnets. They are a curved rectangular shape with angular ear stalks that sit in the ear well and stay in place. They are made from plastic and are relatively lightweight. 

Features

Both the buds have a single button on the top of the chassis, making it easy to access them on the go. Each of the buds also has a small LED light that lets you know the status of the battery and about the pairing. They show red when charging and flash white when the buds are ready to pair. The pairing process is simple and if there is a previously connected device they automatically connect to it when removed from their case.

The buttons have a few different actions. A single click answers incoming calls and also hangs up calls. If one wants to reject a call they need to press longer. Otherwise, clicking once will play or pause audio and a double click will launch the voice assistant your smartphone has on default.

The range is from 25 to 30 feet with a clear line of sight from one's smartphone, if one goes to another room the signal drops. The Xiaomi AirDots have an IPX4 rating, meaning they can handle splashes but not submersion. 

Comments

The Xiaomi AirDots do not have volume control on them, but given these are very budget-friendly buds that is not a dealbreaker. The splash resistance means they can easily be used in the gym too. The 7.2mm drivers produce ample sound for one to enjoy their music.

A single charge gives about 4 hours of playback time, which is roughly what most wireless earbuds manage. The battery is at 300mAh and can be charged in 20 minutes with fast charging. The cable is a microUSB instead of the USB Type-C. 

For the price, the Xiaomi Redmi AirDots perform very well, especially when compared to other wireless earbuds in a similar price range.
