Urban Decay was started to provide a breakaway from the beige, pink and red tone dominated style era of the past. In 1995 Sandy Lerner, one of the co-founders of Cisco Systems and her friend Patricia Holmes mixed colours at her home to create a colour they liked. They then decided to start a brand and named it Urban Decay. The brand is known for its cruelty-free product development as they do not partake in animal testing. Over the years Urban Decay has been owned by various companies, as of 2012 the French cosmetics brand L'Oréal has been in ownership.

With a full roster of all the needed styling accessories, Urban Decay makeup has multiple ranges within its product lines. All the products needed for eye stylisation are available including eye shadow, eyeliner, shadow primer, mascara and more. For the face, Urban Decay has primers, concealers, powders, base, blush and a few other products too. The lip section is stocked with lipstick, gloss, liners and also liquid lipstick. 

The various sections have their necessary tools for application. A lot of these tools are vegan, so as to avoid using animal hairs for their brushes and such. One can buy all these tools separately as well from their Pro Collection. The brand has also done work in partnership with known names such as Gwen Stefani and Kristen Leanne to launch lines that bear their name.
