Why you need a mobile camera lens

Given that smartphones are generally quite thin the lenses in the camera can only achieve so much versatility as the space inside changes how much functionality is possible. To counter this other brands have come up with solutions if you want a wider picture, more zoom, a fish-eye shot or an intense macro shot.

As for the image quality these lenses can't affect the pixel quantity as that is more about the internal parts of the camera, still to some degree clarity can vary as there are cheaper brands that use plastic lenses and better ones use glass. Glass will result in superior passing of light so the smartphone's camera has a better initial value to work on. They also cover the flash most times so if you want to shoot in a low light situation you may need to figure a way around that with an external light source. With a lot of these lenses, you may need to take off the phone cover before you can attach them.
