Xiaomi is one of the top 5 smartphone brands in the world by the number of devices sold, within China it is the top brand by the same standard. The brand caters to a large segment as it produces budget-friendly devices.

The brand ahs a host of other accessories and devices as well. Among their affordable mid-tear range one can find the Redmi Note 9S.

Internals & OS

For the processor, Xiaomi decided to go for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G which is an octa-core chipset. The graphics processing is done by the Adreno 618. For task execution, there is 6GB of RAM and for the storage, there is 128GBs of space. This can also be extended via a microSD card and increased up to 512GB more.

This smartphone is based on the Android software from Google, running version 10 which is machine learning ready. This means it will pick up on your patterns an then perform faster, preempting how you use the device. Layered onto the Android base is their own MIUI 11 skin. The combination works well together making one's usage smooth. Having the extra skin also means that one has some extra options regarding customizations.

Display

A large display of 6.67 inches that has a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. An additional feature allows brightness up to 450 nits. A display that works well for one's gaming needs. The screen protection is handled by Corning's Gorilla Glass 5.

Camera

The rear camera system consists of a quad camera setup. This in itself is impressive for a smartphone n this range. The main camera is a 48MP one, with an 8MP ultrawide and a 5MP macro shooter. The fourth is a 2MP depth sensor to add more layers to one's photography. For the selfie camera, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S has a 16M wide sensor. It is paced neatly into a punch hole in the screen. 

Both the front and back camera can record HD video at 30fps.

Connectivity, sensors & battery

Featuring WiFi, Infrared port, USB 2.0 Type C, Radio with recording, GPS and Bluetooth 5.0. The sensors include fingerprint (side-mounted), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, and compass. The fingerprint sensor is also the power button, which is a neat place to have it. Another interesting feature is the Z-axis linear vibration motor, this provides improved haptic feedback from one's gaming environment.

The battery had to be a large one to support all this tech, so Xiaomi has packed in a 5020mAh cell that is based on Li-Polymer. Also with support for fast charging 18W.

For a smartphone that is in this price range, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S is a great phone, it is well designed and powerful. The power helps it handle most of the latest games well, such as PUBG. It is also splash-proof so one needn't worry about water either. It is available in Aurora Blue, Glacier White, and Interstellar Black.
