Coolers for CPU come in two types, liquid and air coolers. The best type depends on your needs and budget. When it comes to affordability and ease of installation, the air cooler is your best bet. If budget is not a problem and you have all the time in the world for installations and setup, then a liquid CPU cooler is your best choice. Liquid coolers are better in terms of rapid cooling as water wicks away heat faster than air. Liquid coolers also tend to be quieter than air variants. These coolers have components that in combination work to allow for the dissipation of heat produced by the computer's processor.

Thermal Paste

An important thing to remember is the use of thermal paste between the heat sink and the CPU as it will help your CPU cooler perform even better and make your computer even cooler. Some coolers come pre-applied with thermal pastes so you don't need to apply additionally. One way to check if your cooler comes with a thermal paste is to see at the bottom of the water block. If there is a silver layer underneath it, you don't need additional paste.

Stock Cooler vs After Market Cooler

Most CPUs come with stock coolers that perform fairly well for light day to day tasks. For heavy computer users such as gamers, programmers and graphic designers, a stock cooler won't give as good results as the aftermarket cooler would. Also, if you are planning to overclock your CPU, it is only essential that you buy an aftermarket cooler as a stock variant would not do much for you.
