Description

Sony and the camera market

Sony is one of the largest brands in the electronics market in the world, their first camera came out in 1988 but they didn't really take up market space till 1996 when they launched the first of the 'Cyber-shot' series. This series was a hit and based on this Sony cameras held a 20% share of the overall camera market which did eventually drop by around 2005 when DSLRs made waves.

Sony steps into the DSLR arena

Sony started their DSLR wing with the technology they acquired after they purchased Konica Minolta. The series was named 'Sony α' and is often transliterated as Sony Alpha. The series is a success and is the third-largest brand behind Nikon and Canon. The specs of Sony DSLRs are at par with the top brands.

One of the winning features that Sony has incorporated is their high-speed photography, allowing their DSLRs to shoot 12 frames per second at 24megapixels. This is something that is appreciated by sports and wildlife photographers.

Sony has a great image processor that they have built known as the BIONZ, this combined with the CMOS sensors makes for amazing results. The lens quality from Sony is great too, all this combined makes for great cameras.

The Sony cameras are used by a lot of the top tear photographers in the world.

A new direction

There is a new trend which is taking over the DSLR market, this is the mirrorless camera range. These are a lot more compact as they do not have a mirror mechanism and also are great to shoot video. Another advantage of these cameras is that they are a lot faster at shooting images since there is no time spent with the mirror moving. Auto-focus is improved on these cameras as well since it is based on phase-detection and not contrast-detection, meaning it is able to focus on moving targets a lot better as well.

Comments

Which Sony DSLR camera you invest in is a matter of what kind of performance you expect out of your camera and also what you have in mind for how much you want to spend.

The prices are mostly from the top end as Sony is an expensive brand.
