The first digital watch was the Pulsar LED released in 1972, developed jointly by Hamilton Watch Company and Electro-Data. Earlier models of digital watches used to have LED displays, later the LCD display took over as it consumed lesser electricity. LCD displays do have a slight drawback as they get polarized by light, so at times in sunlight they are hard to read. The date and time displayed together is a common design style with most models.

In later years brands such as Seiko, Casio and Timex took over the digital watch market, especially from the 80s to the 90s. Digital watches have many different designs, as there are so many brands and each has their own lines. Some with more minimal designs while others can have funkier shapes and colours.

Certain models of digital watches also have added functions such as a data bank for a smaller number of contacts or a calculator. Casio is famous for making watches with many such added features.

The price of a digital watch depends on the model and brand. A lot of good brands have them selling at nominal rates as this is an older kind of technology today. One can find designs for men, women, children and also many that are unisex. Even today the known and reliable brands are Casio, Seiko and Timex.
